You've made the decision to switch to artificial grass. Smart plan. Now, you're wondering if you could save money by installing the fake grass yourself. Seems like it would be a pretty straight-forward DIY project – sort of like laying carpet, right?

No, actually, but we'll get to that in a minute. First, have you chosen the right artificial grass for your project? Synthetic turf comes in numerous styles , and quality can vary significantly . The product you choose will directly and significantly affect the look, longevity, and value of your installation. But did you know that how your artificial grass is installed will also determine the appearance, longevity, and value of your investment?

Sub-par installation will erase the benefits of a superior, well-chosen product. And even expert installation cannot overcome the deficiencies of a product that is mediocre quality or the wrong grass for your purpose. The only way to ensure maximum return on your investment is by choosing the right product and insisting on professional installation.

Still want to try it yourself?

Installing artificial grass is nothing like laying carpet, it's more like laying sod. If you don't take the time to properly prepare the underlying terrain, you won't get the aesthetic or functional results you expect. And trying to fix problems won't be pretty. Besides, artificial grass installation requires special tools and materials you probably don't have on hand. In a nutshell, you'll have to:

  • Remove your existing lawn. Ugh – and what do you plan to do with all that yard debris?
  • Lay down a weed barrier, cut to fit your fake lawn's shape.
  • Spread a sand/crushed stone mixture over the weed membrane, then pack it into place with a power compacter.
  • Add a thick layer – about .5 to .75 inches – of sand. It will have to be perfectly smooth and level, otherwise your grass will not be smooth or level.
  • Add a layer of shock-absorbent material. Technically, this is optional, but not if you want your artificial grass lawn to have that familiar, slightly "spongy" feeling underfoot. This material also has to be cut to fit.

Finally, it's time for the grass – glued to the shock-absorbent material, if you're using that. You'll need to precisely trim the edges of the turf where it meets walkways or other borders, then secure it in place. But, wait – there's more. To finalize your installation, you'll have to spread silica sand over the grass, then brush it in with a broom. This infill helps stabilize the turf.

And you have to do it right. The list of tasks outlined above doesn't even address specialized drainage needs or other foundational considerations. And what if your yard isn't flat as a pancake? At best, these steps involve plenty of time-consuming, on-your-knees work and additional expense for materials and tool purchase or rental. Wasn't the idea to save time and effort by installing artificial grass?
